About Us

We are a family-run business operating for 10 years, 6 of those years in Sedgefield.
We are now expanding throughout the Garden Route, starting in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna in 2025 and then looking to move further to George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn.

1. The Academy

* We are an affordable, dual-medium, co-educational facility catering for all curriculums from Grade 1 to Grade 12 (Centre dependent)

* We have small classes, where each child has quality time with the tutor, receiving a focused, stimulating and exciting education.

* Independent learning is promoted and self-discipline is encouraged while a tutor remains on hand to help where necessary.

* We offer support for Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN).

* We also offer extra lessons and homework classes over and above the daily tutoring.

* We are approved Impaq invigilators, offering our services to all Grade 10-12 learners who write their tests and exams through Impaq.

* We offer assessor services for Grade 10-12 Impaq learners for English HL and FAL, Afrikaans HL and FAL, Hospitality and Consumer Studies.

* We have added an 8 Week Social Skills and Life Skills course for girls and boys teaching them general topics and skills not taught in a curriculum.

* Learners may register as Full-time (extended) or Casual learners depending on their needs and expectations.

* We pride ourselves on giving the children individual attention, and we achieve this by keeping our class numbers low.

* Our purpose is to support local parents in educating their homeschooled children.

* Although we are an Impaq-listed Tutor Centre, we accept all curriculums. In the past, we have had learners with GED, Cambridge, Teneo, and Think Digital curriculums.

* We are a Centre that is bringing about change in society by educating the learners about different aspects of everyday life and not only focusing on basic curriculum.

* Learners will be taught respect, values, morals, responsibility, self-love and self-acceptance.

2. The Owners

Garden Route Academy of Excellence is under the ownership of Marcia Caldecott and Richard Barthus. The Sedgefield Branch is the third Centre that they have set up. The other two were in KZN.

* Marcia is a qualified educator who majored in English and Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN). Marcia is SACE registered with 20 years of experience. She has taught in both private and government schools and has taught every grade during her teaching career.

* Richard helps with the general administration, invigilating and the day-to-day running of the Centres. He is also a proud volunteer with both the neighbourhood watch and the fire rangers.

* Richard and Marcia are both approved Impaq invigilators. Marcia is also an Impaq-approved assessor for English HL and FAL, Afrikaans HL and FAL, Consumer studies and Hospitality.

* They recognized a need for educational support in the area, so, along with their two girls they moved to Sedgefield from KZN where they have been adding value to the community for 6 years, by assisting parents with educating their homeschooled children.

3. The Academy

Is a listed Impaq Tutor Centre.

* Is NOT a school. We function as a Homeschool Educational Support Centre.

We are not a school, we are a support centre for home-schooled children

The academy is under the ownership of Marcia Caldecott and Richard Barthus and is the third educational facility that they have set up, the other two being in Kwazulu Natal.
Marcia is a qualified educator who majored in English and Learners with special education needs (LSEN).
Marcia is SACE registered and has 20 years of teaching experience. She has taught in both private and public schools and has taught all the grades during her teaching career.

They recognized a need for this support system in this area when they made enquiries via ‘Sedge locals’ and other social media platforms. The dual medium academy, situated in Sedgefield at 26 Main Street in the Waterstone Junction, on the first floor in Units 1 and 2. Standing at the Spar and looking in the direction of Pick & Pay, you will see stairs going to the first floor. It is there where you will find us.

The couple and their two young girls fell in love with Sedgefield, and are determined to add value to the community.

Richard, who handles the general admin, invigilating and the day-to-day running of the academy, is already a proud volunteer with both the neighbourhood watch and the Fire Rangers.
